This is Why

October 24, 2021 – 2nd & Lindaro, atmospheric river floods downtown San Rafael.

Sustainable San Rafael is an all-volunteer group dedicated to advocacy and education to help bring about a healthy and aware society. We are organized around the idea that we can-and must-do more to fight climate change and encourage sustainable living.

MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS (PARTIAL LIST)

Since 2006, Sustainable San Rafael has:

  • Drafted & implemented the City’s Climate Change Action Plan and General Plan 2040.
  • Rallied hundreds to call for climate action, and thousands at Lead on Climate events.
  • Sparked countywide preparedness for sea level rise, wildfires, and deadly heat waves.
  • Initiated the MarinCAN roadmap to zero-net greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.

Novato residents working together to help create a healthier, more economically vital, and socially equitable city.

Sustainable Novato advocates for practical steps that can take us toward that goal through educational forums on sustainable living and by working on policy initiatives that work towards systemic change to reduce climate risk.

MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS (PARTIAL LIST)

  • Solar Schools: Initiated and facilitated Novato School Solar, which brought solar systems to 10 schools in the Novato Unified School District (NUSD). Producing over 2,200 megawatts annually, and saving save NUSD seven million dollars over 25 years.
  • Toxic Free Parks: Successfully advocated for the city to adopt an integrated pest management program to keep toxic chemicals out of our parks and open space.
  • City Policies: Supported implementation of Novato’s Climate Action Plan and Zero Waste Goals.
  • Advocated for a City Sustainability Coordinator
  • MCE: Actively advocated for the formation of Marin Clean Energy.

SUSTAINABLE MILL VALLEY believes in spreading awareness and spurring action regarding the Climate Crisis.

Our mission is zero carbon, zero waste, water smart, and environmentally safe. We hold monthly forums on current issues and advocate for policy changes.

MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS (PARTIAL LIST)

  • Climate Emergency Resolution: Sustainable Mill Valley organized environmental leaders to join a Climate Emergency Resolution (CER) Committee and succeeded in getting 11 of 12 cities and the County to pass a Climate Emergency Resolution.
  • Bicycle Advocacy Group: Sustainable Mill Valley organized a meetup on bicycle advocacy and is a founding partner of a new coalition focused on bicycle policy and infrastructure improvements in Mill Valley.
  • Climate Action Plan (CAP) Task Force: We were successful in motivating our town council to form a CAP Task Force to help city staff with our CAP update. Three of our members were selected to serve on the task force which is currently working on the CAP.
  • Reusable Mill Valley: We focus on reducing plastic pollution to safeguard our public health, community, and environment by championing the transition to a reusable economy. We organized advocacy and actions to ensure the passing of the Marin County Reusable Foodware Ordinance. We are now working to ensure that MV and other towns in the County adopt the ordinance. We also have a zero waste schools team addressing meal services, switching to reusable foodware.

“Four years ago, Sustainable Mill Valley began with discussions around a table at the Mill Valley Lumberyard and now we effectively advocate for personal climate behavior change through Zoomed Meet-Ups with local speakers, share friendly guidelines on our web and many local initiatives. We see local environmental changes and it feels great to be part of the climate crisis solution.”

— Julie Carlson, Mill Valley

“Sustainable Mill Valley is actively working with the City to make the bike and pedestrian infrastructure safer and more convenient. Walking and biking reduces greenhouse gasses, reduces stressful traffic, and provides a healthy alternative to driving.”
